Today, the European Commission has announced the winners of the 2021 EU Product Safety Award where 11 companies from eight different countries were celebrated for their innovation and investment to protect consumers.

We are excited and proud to announce that ONANOFF® is one of the companies celebrated. We have been granted a silver award at the 2021 EU Product Safety Awards, under the category Protecting the Safety of Vulnerable Consumer Group, for their efforts to protect consumers with BuddyPhones®, their SafeAudio® headphone brand for kids.

Organized every two years by the European Commission, the EU Product Safety Award celebrates business initiatives that go the extra mile to protect consumers and raise the bar for consumer product safety across the EU. By showcasing these best practices, the European Commission aims to celebrate industry successes and inspire other businesses to follow suit. The award also aims to raise consumer awareness around product safety. Following an eligibility screening, a jury panel of policy and safety experts selected the finalists. All finalists were then screened against internationally recognized corporate social responsibility criteria. Winners were determined based on four factors: innovation, impact, inspiration potential and company product safety processes.

The BuddyPhones® headphone safety features include safe maximum volume, rounded surfaces, and an easily detachable audio cable to avoid tripping accidents. To ensure chemical safety, the company tests for over 80 hazardous chemicals. A unique headphone with a detachable boom microphone was designed for school use, which can be folded and easily stored. From the very beginning the company has continued to champion safer listening habits, raising awareness and informing parents, teachers and children about the risks of Noise Induced Hearing Loss and its effects across multiple platforms.

“The use of headphones by children increased dramatically during the lockdown. This innovation could inspire other players in the market to innovate,” said the Jury.

Other notable winners at the event included IKEA for their OMTÄNKSAM collection consisting of furniture and household products with accessibility in mind, and Procter & Gamble for their Tampax product innovation and awareness-raising campaigns that tackle disinformation.
